Yes, Whitman, the American prophet is expected to be included in such an exhausive work. His attitudes towards love and harmony as the only remedy to solve the dichotomy prevailing in the American society in the 19th c have to be praised. Want to feel how a human is a free, valued entity? read parts of his" Song of myself".
however a question kicks in my mind when reading his modern poetry: what makes his writings poetry despite their strong deviation from the conventions of poetry-writing??? Can we classify his poetry under any new genre??

I have read ur lines and i do agree with you. Here is my humble view about his writings.
One will be on cynical about classifying him. But, the more you deepen in his writings the more you would be able to sort him. I reckon he is a platonic, an emersonian or a wordthwathrian.
His poetry is mixed among the works of those people and even you find glimpse of metaphysics. On my view, he is a mystical poet who believes in nature as a dominant power.
In any case, he is revolutionary poet in terms of themes. Several striking, odd and new ideas can be found in his poetry. On things maybe was the reason. He wants to follow the master's steps, Emerson, by having new genre for America. Yet, anything he will write far from the British lit will be okay!!! Maybe this brought some odd themes to his poetry as "song of myself" and other ones.
