Feminism! Feminism! Welcome Back,
The different feminist approaches pinpointed in the history of literature make us all recall Chopin with her shocking attitudes towards women's rights. I would not be suprized, however, to know that a group of men writers might tackle the job of defending men's rights!!!
In my opinion, Eudora Welty's inights are a good way to reach a compromise in this regard.
Thanks again,
Khawla.

Comment on the "Desiree's Baby" short story for the writer Kate Chopin

1- Plot summary:
"Desiree's Baby" opens with a brief history of the foundling Desiree. Who was adopted by the valmonde family after they found her by the side of the road.
The valmondes were childless, and they took in the child and raised her as their own child. When Desiree becomes a young woman, her beauty attracts the attention of Armond Aubigny, aneighboring plantation owner.
Although Desiree's Father reminds Armand that Desiree's heritage is unknown, Armand says that doesn't matter, because he will give her a new name and the finest name in Louisiana.
After their marriage, Desiree gives birth to a son. This Son- is black. One day Madame valmonde comes to visit her daughter and her child when Madame Valmond sees the black child she surprises and says that is not the baby. But her daughter explains her mother that child is her baby and he husband Armand, is very happy. Moreover he becomes dealing his workers delicately and lovely.
After three months, Armand says to her wife that this child is not a white so she is not white.
Desiree objects of this conviction, explaining that she is whiter than him.
Consequently, she sends a letter to her mother, saying this story, so her mother requesting her to come back to her mother.
After that Desiree says to her husband that she will leave, but he doesn't object this leaving.
One day, when Armand was burning some clothes belongs to his wife and child and some letters from his lover Desiree, he hold one letter from his mother to her father, she said in it:
" I think my God for giving me my husband and Armand, and for not knowing (Armand) that I belongs to the race whom was cursed with the brand slavery.

2- Characters:
A- Armand Aubigny
Who married Desiree and has a child who was a black, he is very rich and has a plantation and loves her wife very much in the beginning but then he hate her very much after giving birth to a black child.
But letter he discovered that his mother belonged to the cursed race with the brand slavery.
B- Desiree and her black child
She is married by Armand but after she gave birth to a black child, she is condemned by her husband that she is not white.
C- Madame Valmonde and her husband
They are the couple who adopted Desiree when the found her by one road and raised her as their child, because they are childless.
D- Armand's father and mother
Armand's father come from Paris with his eight years child, Armand, after buring his wife there.

3- Setting and local color:
At the time of publication of Bayon Folk, which reprinted "Desiree Baby" Chopin was primarily seen as a local colorist. This designation was partially due to the fact that chopin wrote about the Cajuns and Creoles of Louisiana.
Cajuns: French settlers were driven from Canada to USA; they are black.
Creoles: The early French and Spanish settlers who were white, or mixed from Spanish and French who were black.

4- Themes:
Race and Racism
The themes of race and Racism are integral to "Desiree Baby" for prevailing ideas of Chopin's time that African Americans were inferior to white leads to the destruction of Desiree and her baby. Armand is confident in the superiority of his lineage and his race.
He comes from one of the oldest and proudest families in Louisiana. Armand conducts himself in away typical of the cruel master of southern legend. In marked contrast to his father, he rules his slaves strictly and Desiree's delight in his initial good mood after the birth of the baby demonstrates his true nature. "He hasn't punished one of them (the slaves) since baby is born.
When the child begins to show evidence of being of mixed ancestry, Armand believes it must be Desiree's unknown ancestors who have tainted his family and brought unconscious injury upon his family.

5- Irony:
I think, in this story is little, but when Armand condemned his wife that she isn't white, he intened that she is without ethics or he intened her manners and her color and her unknown origin.

6- story End:
It is open end or may he go back to recover his wife.

7- point of View:
It is third-person narrator, writer uses pronouns as he, she, it.

8- Another Critical for Some Words:
I think the writer is white man and may be he hate the husband and prefer the wife of her husband and the write may hate the black. The witness of this he uses the pronoun it for two time, in the story to talk about the black child.
"Madame valmonde lifted it (child) and walked with it (child) over the window that was lightest".
